COUNCIL COMMITTEES
The committee meetings are held to make decisions of the Council. There are three (04) Standing Committees function for taking important decisions in respect of its functions. These are;
- General Committee Meeting
- Standing Committee of Finance and Law
- Standing Committee for Health & Sanitation
- Standing Committee for Works & Water Works
General Committee Meeting
This committee meeting is held once in each month. The Mayor has the authority to call for the General Committee meeting for urgent needs.
Committee of Finance and Law
Decision making on Council expenses, creation and corrections on 'By-laws' are made under this committee meeting.
Health Committee Meeting
Activities made by the Health Department of the Council is discussed in this committee - such as Health of the city, waste disposal, City maintenance & other environmental based needs.
Works and Water Works Committee Meeting
Construction and Development plans are made on this committee meetings regarding the Works and Water Works projects/activities.
In addition to the above mentioned Standing Committees, there are about six (06) subject committees are functioning in the Council. The subject committees consist of the Councilors, the Heads of Departments as well as the Chief Clerk of the concerned department. The committees include;
- Sports Committee
- Library Committee Management Committee
- Tourist Committee
- Planning Committee
- Hospital Committee
- Environmental Committee
- Monitoring Committee
These committees also meet once a month and discuss on the activities planned under relevant department. The Environmental Committee has members representing other government departments working in Nuwara Eliya. The Environmental Committee also has representatives of NGOs, Grama Niladharies and such field level officials.
